The freshwater pearl is a very common gem that is used to create jewelry today. Originally freshwater pearls were produced in Japan, but today many areas have learned the craft of producing freshwater pearls and Japan no longer holds the market. Grafting is done to produce more freshwater pearls for processing. Freshwater pearls are made when some type of irritate gets into the tissue of the mussel and it becomes irritated. The mussel produces a mucus around the irritation which gradually will harden and become a pearl. As the craft was learned, grafting was used to produce the maximum number of freshwater pearl with the smallest number of mussels. The cockscomb mussel was a larger mussel which was capable of producing more pearls. However it was determined that by using the maximum amount of space, the quality of the pearls which were produced was much lower. Gradually the focus shifted to a triangular shaped mussel which could not produce as many freshwater pearl but produced a higher quality. |

When I was pregnant with my daughter Robin, I had a bit of an "I didn't know I was pregnant" experience. I had morning sickness, and gained weight and everything, but, it wasn't terrible. I only gained about 18 pounds, which is apparently strange for a pregnant woman. However, when I was pregnant with my son Dominic, I had extreme symptoms. I was nauseous all the time, I craved Sauerkraut of all things, and then was repulsed by it all within the same five minute period. I gained 45 pounds as well. My husband says I was a lot crazier when I was pregnant with Robin, though. Though my pregnancies were exciting, I'm glad they are over, and I can enjoy my wonderful children, although I did love shopping for all kinds of maternity clothing, including maternity leggings too - there is quite a market for fashion for the pregnant woman I found out! |
